Michael is the creator of the Solopreneur Hour Podcast and the commander in chief of the mastermind group SoloLab. Firstly, I have to say, if it wasn’t for Michael O’Neal, this podcast wouldn’t exist and I wouldn’t have this podcast. The Solopreneur hour, just reached its 1 millionth download and is killing it among the top podcasts out there. In fact, I first started listening to Michael’s show in November, and I consumed it like a coke addict. With the Solopreneur Hour podcast, I went from being just a listener to being one of the inside crew members in just a few months. I am privileged to be sharing stories with Michael as a mentee and as a friend. 

We first talk about Philadelphia and how much Michael misses the food there. Philly cheese steaks, pasta and great pizza with a massive influence from the Italians is what makes up the food there. We move on to talk about the food in San Diego, and Michael’s love-hate relationship with seafood

We talk a lot about influences. What makes us do certain things when it comes to food. Among the big topics we cover are:

  1. The reason and the story behind why I’ll try any food once.
  2. The story of when my grandmother cooked our pet rabbits for dinner.
  3. Michael’s love for Indian food and how much he loves Palak Paneer and Naan.
  4. Michael talks about how he ate a bite of fillet, got up from his chair and circled the table just pointing to his steak on his plate.
  5. Michael remembers one of his favourite customers’ who was Italian and loved Michael’s coffee when he used to wait tables.

Michael’s fondest food memories

Both Michael’s parents were great chefs and his dad would make some great Cajun food. Michael talks about how famous his dad was for his seafood gumbo. Michael’s memory was waking up to the smell of roux when he was about 7 or 8 years old. Michael’s dad was famous from bringing people together with his food, including the Mayor of Ohio.  

Hosting a dinner party tips

  • Hospitality is key when you invite people over. Provide everything and make them feel welcome.
  • Take their coats and introduce them around.
  • Sit around a table before dinner and go around the table and get everyone to say 2 things they are grateful for, one thing they were good at that day and one thing they were looking forward to.
  • When you’re on a first date or on the 50th date, pay!
  • Pay it forward when you go out to dinner 

Europe Learnings

  • Curry chicken salads in Belgium
  • Cheap Fries in a cone
  • How popular Shawarma is around the world 
  • Pizza in New York is way better than the ones he tried in Italy
  • Baguette’s and croissant’s in Paris

Cooking tips

  • Pull the eggs out 30 seconds before their done, because they’ll continue to cook. Never overcook eggs.
  • Season everything layer by layer as you go through.
