225. Balancing Entrepreneurial Freedom with Pragmatism with Jason Malouin

American-born, Brisbane-based Jason Malouin found his calling with photography. He shoots headshots, portraits and commercial projects on location and in his New Farm studio. Through his art, he captures meaningful images of people that communicate their passion, power and intention immediately. Over the course of his career, Jason has developed a process of drawing out powerful connections from everyone he works with, and he’s realised that his ‘superpower’ is getting other people to show him their ‘superpower.’

In this episode of Bond Appetit, I chat with Jason about his entrepreneurial journey – the hard, good, ugly and uncomfortable times. We cover it all as Jason has an interesting way of thinking about the balance of freedom and structure for an entrepreneurial business. Tune in to this episode as we get into an excellent discussion about Jason’s theme for the year – planting his feet firmly on a constantly shifting ground – and how that mindset transformed his business.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Jason’s definition of freedom and how it’s evolved over the years
  • What Jason has been most proud of so far in his entrepreneurial journey
  • The struggle of restraint from starting too many new projects
  • The one thing that would cause Jason to lose his sense of humour
  • The greatest lesson that Jason learned from his mother
  • How and why Jason has, at times, doubted his own creativity
  • Working through and past constraints
  • Jason’s dreams for his career over the next ten years
  • Why he had to redefine and reformat the business aspects of his career recently
